I guess it is no surprise given my age that so many people I know are caring for aging parents and other loved ones who are in the process of moving on – some might say getting ready to ‘cross over’ or ‘go home’. As many of us know this is often an incredibly challenging and painful time as we ready for the impending loss.

For those of us who believe in reincarnation and past lives the emotion of imminent loss is partially mitigated by the knowledge that we will be reunited with loved ones and in some cases to start all over again in a future life. For those who don’t accept the notion of multiple lives or life after death, preparing for the loss of a loved one can be excruciating. Many are familiar with our side of this difficult phase of life. Far fewer know the experience of the one who is moving on — until now!

The British rock band James has just released their 20th album – La Petit Mort – inspired by the death of two members of lead singer Tim Booth’s soul family, his mother and a dear friend. The video release of the song Moving On must be seen to be fully appreciated. It is at once joyful and haunting. One’s impulse is to start dancing if not rocking in place to the melody and poignant lyrics.

If you comprehend that you are just a visitor here, back let’s say for the 655th time, then the experiences of life and loss, joy and suffering are so very different than if one believes there is only ‘one-go-round’. It is clear from the lyrics and video of Moving On that James’ production crew feels this in their hearts and souls.

The cycle of death and rebirth are brilliantly captured in the song’s video available on You Tube and through the link contained here. I will admit, forever the multi-tasker that I was a distracted viewer the first time around. Midway, my ears and eyes synced and I realized that I was not listening to a song about a love affair that had reached its end. Moving On offers the thoughts of a dying person whose life has reached its end. And from this standpoint, those of us who are not yet moving on glimpse if only for a few minutes the perspective of those who are facing the end of one life and wondering what comes next.

Give yourself a gift. Take a few minutes; view the You Tube of Moving On. I guarantee your heart will be lighter about an imminent loss or for that matter – your own mortality. You will have gained invaluable insight about an aspect of life that too often goes undiscussed. And oh, by the way, let me know if you can watch it without dancing around or bopping and swaying in place?

Moving on is a time to celebrate what has been and to herald what’s to come. You’ll be surprised how good you will feel accepting this reality and watching James’ Moving On!
