I wish I could completely live by the wisdom captured in Sri Ramana Maharshi’s words. So often, too often, I find myself dwelling on imperfection.

Do you strive for perfection or for it in those you love and interact with? Perhaps you can’t relate to the word – perfection – but if you look closely and are completely honest, can you admit that you hold yourself and others to incredibly high standards and are pained when these standards are not met? While this tendency inspires great achievements, seeds innovation, spawns advances on all levels of society and for that matter the evolution of civilization itself, it can leave one feeling miserable when loved ones, friends, associates and people in general fail to live-up to your standards. It also obscures a profound truth. On the surface this may not seem to be a ‘big deal’ but in fact the drive for betterment obscures our very nature – that divine perfection exists as the nature of your heart, your soul.

For those completely satisfied and happy with the duality of Lila ~ the play of life, this is likely an obscure matter with no need to read on. Conversely, this is an important matter for those aware that earthly life is but a temporary stop on their eternal journey. The ‘earth school’ as we have come to know it offers countless opportunities through trial and error, crisis and calamity, disaster and despair.

How does one stop losing composure in response to these LIFE DISAPPOINTMENTS, these perceived imperfections? You begin through a deepening acceptance that each of us is a player in a Divine plan that is unfolding within and around us. This wisdom can take years, decades even lifetimes to fully comprehend. But once grasped, one can begin to apply this understanding to how you evaluate yourself and others and how you react to LIFE’S DISAPPOINTMENTS.

On the days when I have had to cope with LIFE’S DISAPPOINTMENTS, I have been mindful of what I call the double whammy – coping with my loss of composure. Looking back it becomes clear that my expectations and silent hope that life and people would live up to my standard of perfection is directly connected to my loss of composure – the higher the expectations, the greater the loss of composure. Bad enough we have to accept LIFE DISAPPOINTMENTS but then we have to live with the monster that lurks within.

What triggered your worst meltdown? What prompted your most recent ‘hissy-fit’? Was it your child’s inability to live up to behavioral expectations or school performance, your parents inability to recognize your value or appreciate your actions, your partner/lover’s failure to reciprocate your love and attention, an outrageous decision taken by your boss, or the outcome of an action that you took yourself? Whatever prompted your loss of composure, you can be certain that at least momentarily you forgot that you, your child, parent, partner/lover, boss is divine. You forgot that perfection exists as the nature of your heart and soul. You forgot that perfection exists as the nature of everyone’s heart and soul.

The journey to full AWARENESS and REALIZATION is for sure long and circuitous. And our inability to comprehend our own divinity and perfection and the divine nature of all others is like a metaphorical draw bridge that is stuck in the open position preventing further travel. The gear shift of the bridge can be unstuck through understanding and integrating Sri Ramana Maharshi’s reminder that perfection exists as the nature of your heart!
